How LGCs are calculated
Under the federal Large-scale Renewable Energy Target, a solar power station creates one LGC for every megawatt-hour of electricity it generates, verified against meter data each year until the scheme ends in 2030. Annual revenue = LGC capacity (the part above the STC line) × specific yield (site production per kW) ÷ 1,000 × the LGC market price. Unlike STCs, LGCs are not deemed upfront; they pay out as an ongoing annual revenue stream. Registered 17 September 2026, the Mid-scale Solar Regulations give STCs to the first 1 MW of site capacity for solar installed from 1 October 2026, and LGCs cover the balance above 1 MW. For installs before that date the line is 100 kW: STCs on the first 100 kW, LGCs on the balance.
For solar installed from 1 October 2026, the first 1 MW of site capacity earns upfront STCs on a fixed five-year deeming period (Mid-scale Solar Regulations, registered 17 September 2026), and only the balance above 1 MW earns LGCs as a registered power station under the federal Large-scale Renewable Energy Target. For installs before 1 October 2026 the line is 100 kW: STCs on the first 100 kW, LGCs on the balance.
